The annual sight night Edmonton fun run and walk is back this Fall and registration is officially open. We have some big changes in store for the upcoming event!<\/p>\n

Raising funds and awareness for the Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind (ASRAB), sight night, presented by Flaman Fitness, is more than just another run. It is a vision-optional event. Runners who are visually impaired share the path with sighted runners. The after-dark timing makes it a more even playing field!<\/p>\n

Dates<\/strong>: Saturday, September 28th, 2019
\nCost<\/strong>: $45 for adults and $20 for youth. Kids 4 and under are free
\nTime<\/strong>: 7:00 pm

sight night\u00a0Edmonton 2019 is set to take place on Saturday, September 28th, 2019!\u00a0Please join us once again in lighting up the night along the river valley for the Eighth Annual Edmonton sight night, presented by Flaman Fitness! This year\u2019s event offers a 2.5K walk or 5K and 10K chipped run; where sighted and visually impaired participants will light up the night together with their \u201csight night lights\u201d and enthusiasm as they raise awareness, support and funding for Alberta\u2019s visually impaired athletes.<\/p>\n

Registration is now open!\u00a0Register here!<\/a>\u00a0Each participant will receive a high quality headlamp (\u201csight night light\u201d)<\/p>\n

We encourage everyone to help ASRAB in raising funds for sight night! Please use the Pledge Form to collect pledges (tax receipts can be issued for donations over $20) from your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours \u2026 anyone that can assist us in supporting sport and recreation opportunities for persons with a vision impairment. We look forward to a successful sight night!<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Carrie Anton!<\/b><\/h3>\n

Carrie Anton is a gold medalist<\/strong> from the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Summer Games in the sport of Goalball and an Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame inductee for accomplishment in sport. She continually promotes equity as a coach, a volunteer, and an athlete in a variety of sports. Recreationally, she is involved in goalball, blind ice hockey, tennis, soccer, tandem cycling, dragon boating, skiing and more. She enjoys her role in the community on various boards such as the Edmonton Sport Council and ASRAB. Professionally, Carrie has over 25 years experience as an assistive technology and accessibility specialist. She has been with Athabasca University since December 2007. Her passion lies in ensuring accessibility and she works on projects that advance and enhance quality experiences for people with disabilities in employment, education, sport and life.<\/div>\n

Past 2018 Co-Chair Hayden McMullan<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"HaydenHayden is 9 years old and was born with Oculocutaneous Albinism and an eye condition called Nystagmus. The Albinism is a genetic disease in which both parents must be carriers of the gene. The Nystagmus is also a disorder of the eye which he developed not long after birth. It causes involuntary movement back and forth of his eye. Hayden\u2019s eye acuity throughout the day can be between 20\/200 (level which is considered legally blind) to 20\/400. Depending on the lighting, how he is feeling and the circumstances of the day, his vision can worsen at any time. Hayden\u2019s vision cannot be corrected with lenses or surgery as the vision loss is caused in the optic nerve to the brain.<\/p>\n

At a young age Hayden had a huge interest in sports. He is a very active child and loves to socialize. Hayden played soccer from ages 4-8 until he found it too hard to keep up with his mates. Hayden enjoys swimming and his vision has never held him back from excelling in the sport but he found it wasn\u2019t enough of an interaction with others to keep his interest. This was when we found Goal Ball. Hayden has now played his first year of it and is absolutely hooked. Not only is he loving the competiveness of the sport but loves the ability to play and compete with other children in the low vision community. Its like we have found our family away from home now. He looks forward to taking the sport as far as he can and he appreciates what ASRAB has provided so far for him. It wasn\u2019t until we became members of ASRAB that we learned there was such a sport as Blind Hockey. Hayden has now spent the last year determined to learn how to skate so he will be able to participate in this sport when he is at the appropriate age. The sports and events he has been able to attend now through ASRAB have turned him into the most confident, abled child you could imagine. He doesn\u2019t let any of his vision loss hold him back and he hopes to lead other children with similar abilities to find the athlete within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
