Today we are paying tribute to &#8220;Team Running for Jay,&#8221; in memory of Jason Schmidt. This team has been with us since the beginning and embody what this fundraiser is all about. Jason had lost his vision in an MVC in 2007 and had an extensive recovery. Jay was given a 10% chance of surviving, but he beat all odds. Jason and his mom did the first Sight Night in Calgary on a very chilly November evening 2011. He did the 8 km run with guide Sean.<\/p>\n<p>After that he was scouted (lol) to play on the ASRAB Goal ball team.<\/p>\n<p>We did the run the next year 2012, in Edmonton, our team was then started with 5 people. In 2013, Jason was chosen to be Sight Night Edmonton\u2019s Honorary Co-chair with Mayor Mandel. Our team grew that year to include many family and friends. Jason passed away through the night on Aug 15, 2014 due to an undiagnosed heart condition sustained through his accident 7 yrs earlier. We were all bound and determined to carry on Jason\u2019s Sight Night Legacy. We gathered a large team of 30 that year, and Flaman put in a team in memory of Jason. We also had relatives do their own Sight Night walk in Kelowna.<\/p>\n<p>2015-present. Every year we will continue to support ASRAB and Sight Night. We all enjoy coming together to remember Jason.<\/p>\n<p>Some years our team is a bit smaller, other year a bit bigger. We will see what 2020 brings us!!! His mom researched how he could participate in sports and landed on ASRAB, and he started with \u201cmovement for me\u201d starting his journey with ASRAB.<\/p>\n<p>To name a few, Zack has Participated in movement for me, skateboarding, soccer, dance, walking club, triathlon, skiing, lawn bowling, bocce ball, with his favourite being walking club because you get to walk for an hour and talk and he really likes talking.<br \/>\nGabe got involved with ASRAB 4 years ago when his mom asked him if he wanted to try goalball, he asked what it was, she explained it to him, and he said yes! It started with goalball but it spiralled into swimming, skiing, skateboarding, soccer, walking club, gymnastics and more. Currently there are only 7 Buddy dogs across Canada. Their dogs don\u2019t help them with sports but they do connect to them on a deeper emotional level and are giving the boys more responsibility and confidence.<a name=\"Day5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>October 5 \u2013 World Teachers for Visually Impaired Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Today is World Teachers for Visually Impaired Day. Danille Hamelink is an educational consultant for students who are blind and visually impaired in southern Alberta. Danille says, \u201cI consider myself lucky to work as a Teacher for the Blind and Visually Impaired. On a very good day I&#8217;d like to think I teach my students something impactful. However, every single day my students teach me about life, resiliency, and spirit!.\u201d Thank you to Danille and all teachers for the visually impaired.<a name=\"Day6\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>October 6 \u2013 National Coaches Day<\/h3>\n<p>Today&#8217;s #sightnight virtual theme day is in celebration of all our fantastic coaches out there! In addition to the improved health and physical skills, for children with a visual impairment physical activity and sport are a powerful vehicle for social connection as well as improving their confidence, balance, strength, etc. to better navigate throughout their daily activities. We are fortunate to have so many great teams join sight night every year and today we would like to feature Brian McIvor and his family from Calgary, who have been participating in sight night since the beginning and a top fundraiser every year!<\/p>\n<p>Brian McIvor has been a part of ASRAB since 1974. In the last few years he&#8217;s been mainly involved in lawn bowling, but was previously involved in hockey and track and field.<br \/>\nThe McIvors have been participating in Sight Night since the very beginning&#8230;nieces, nephews, cousins, brother in laws, sisters, family friends and more have made an impact. Brian said \u201cmy team has really encouraged me to take part each year, and they&#8217;ve been willing to help out with Sight Night &#8211; they look forward to it every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The awareness that Brian wanted to show his family has started to spread to others. Unfortunately COVID hit and plans changed. BUT the group from Red Deer still made it happen and we couldn&#8217;t be more excited for them. It was hard to choose a family because there are so many amazing families that are a part of ASRAB. The ambassadors are the Ruttle Family. The family consists of Daniela, James, Curtis, and Cass.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis and Cass are very heavily involved in ASRAB, they have participated in almost everything such as goalball, dance, gymnastics, sports literacy, golf, triathlon, skateboarding, horseback riding, soccer, skiing, hockey, skating, and much more. Their favourite activities are definitely hockey and skateboarding! Curtis and Cass are athletic and active so it was a no brainer to participate in ASRAB and it has given them a ton of opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, the weekend of Sight Night, the Ruttle family always had hockey except for last year, they finally got to participate and Daniela volunteered at a station, and since it\u2019s virtual this year, they will be participating once again because they had a ton of fun and love to support ASRAB.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis and Cass, even though they are only in grade 10 and grade 8 and have accomplished so much including being Para Athletes and Advocates for the Visually Impaired and have been able to do so much from the support of their family. Today we want to celebrate a few of the groups who have been with us for many years. Below is a message from our sight night chair, Carrie Anton:<\/p>\n<p>The Beverly Optimists are an integral part of sight night.<\/p>\n<p>Since I can remember they have donated time and funds to ensure we are a success. By manning the BBQ and cooking up a storm, the Beverly Optimists are part of our sight night team of volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>I love sharing stories and they love meeting our blind athletes. Dean, myself, Bri and Vi were invited to chat at meetings. We definitely gained friends in this crew of tireless volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite moment is when I first met Shelly [president] in my first year of coordinating sight night Edmonton. She comes to me holding something and asks, &#8220;what is this?&#8221;. I say, &#8220;spatula&#8221;. She asks calmly, &#8220;for flipping burgers?&#8221;. I shyly answer, &#8220;no, for baking&#8221;. And I thought predicting the number of burgers was my biggest problem. The Beverly Optimist crew came to the rescue, delivering BBQs, running home for hamburger flippers and back up propane.<\/p>\n<p>When we switched venues last year, the Beverly Optimists said, &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;ve got it&#8221; and they organized the buffet station. I have no worries when the Beverly Optimists take the ball and run. That is the team I like to play on.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Beverly Optimists Team for your support over the years and again this year during our virtual sight night 2020 fund raiser. There are several teams in AB who we want to celebrate including The Edmonton SeeHawks, Red Deer Central BullsEye and the Calgary Seeing Ice Dogs. On October 4th, several members of the Edmonton SeeHawks took to the ice to complete the #sightnight race on skates!
