Here is his story:

Hi, my name is Curtis Ruttle, I am 16 years old, in grade 11, and I am legally blind.

I have an eye condition called aniridia – which is the absence of the iris (coloured part of your eye). Aniridia is my main diagnosis, but with it, comes other eye problems such as nystagmus, cataracts, increased chances of glaucoma, and very high light sensitivity, also known as photophobia.

While I may live every day with sight loss, this doesn’t stop me from doing what I want. I still do the same things anyone else can. For example, I am the youngest member of the CNIB National Youth Council, and a founding member of Alt Route – an accessible skatepark project for youth living with sight loss.

In my spare time I enjoy photography, sports (hockey, skateboarding, swimming, skiing, and mountain biking, etc), spending time outdoors, and have recently gotten really into video editing. To make this short, yes, I do a lot.

I was originally introduced to ASRAB about 7 or 8 years ago, when I was participating in the Children’s Goalball program. While goalball isn’t my sport of choice, I have had a lot of other opportunities to try many different sports through ASRAB – other sports such as golf, track and field, soccer, triathlon, rock climbing, skating, blind hockey, and many more.

I am honoured to be chosen as the Honorary Chair for Sight Night Calgary 2021. I am super happy to see everyone who has joined us this year for another amazing night! However, you chose to participate – run, walk, volunteer, or donate, your participation is extremely appreciated. All funds raised will go back into supporting Albertans living with sight loss through programming and supports provided through ASRAB, these include the competitive sports such as goalball, as well as active living programs and physical literacy.

Click here to register or visit us at www.asrab.ab.ca

sight night Calgary 2021 – Honorary Chair Saturday, November 13, 2021 Eau Claire Park, Calgary Curtis Ruttle sight night Calgary 2021 is pleased to announce Curtis Ruttle as the Honorary Chair of the event.
