{"id":725,"date":"2015-08-06T20:31:12","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T20:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asrab.ab.ca\/?page_id=725"},"modified":"2015-08-06T20:31:12","modified_gmt":"2015-08-06T20:31:12","slug":"miles-for-matthew","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/asrab.ab.ca\/?page_id=725","title":{"rendered":"Miles for Matthew"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Participating in sight night as a team is a fun way to bring people together to support ASRAB and generate more awareness about the sport and recreational opportunities available to visually impaired Albertans. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">At the 2014 sight night event, one of the largest teams was Miles for Matthew. \u00a0Angie Silvius started this team back in 2013 with her friend Kathleen in honour of her son, Matthew. \u00a0Matthew, whose now 8, was born with LCA. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t know he was blind until his three month check up but Matthew doesn\u2019t let being blind stop him. \u00a0He did the run last year,\u201d says Angie.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">It was important to Angie to create this team not only for her son, but also to raise awareness about the resources available to blind and visually impaired Albertans. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cI\u2019m always making sure Matthew is able to try out sports and recreation every possibility we get and ASRAB provides these opportunities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Miles for Matthew consists of family, friends, church friends and everyone who loves Matthew. \u00a0In 2014, there were about 30 members and Angie predicts there will be about 40 in 2015. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cParticipating in sight night as a team has brought us together in a way no one will understand. \u00a0We all do it for Matthew and others with visual impairments. \u00a0It\u2019s an amazing feeling knowing you\u2019re helping them get a chance to try things they never thought they\u2019d be able to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Participating as a team in sight night is a win-win for Angie. \u00a0She\u2019s able to raise money for ASRAB which provides sport and recreation opportunities for her son and generate awareness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cYou\u2019d be surprised how many people have no idea about organizations like ASRAB but if you promote what you\u2019re doing it makes a difference. \u00a0That\u2019s my biggest piece of advice to other team captains: promote, promote, promote. \u00a0Sometimes it feels like you\u2019re hounding people for donations or to join your team but it\u2019s all worth it in the end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Participating as a team is simple. \u00a0Gather some friends, family members or co-workers, decide on a team captain and a team name, have the team captain register the team and then invite everyone else to register! \u00a0All your fundraising will go towards your team total and teams will have a chance to win some extra prizes! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Need more information?
