Four years ago<\/strong>, my highly energetic, athletic 10 year old was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease, RP (Retinitis Pigmentosis). It felt like the rug had been pulled out from under our feet. Our son never had walked he only ran. How were we going to keep our little man going?<\/strong> Then worse news came. We found out he was already legally blind. Meaning that he has less than 20 degrees of vision in each eye.<\/p>\n We knew very little about the world of the visually impaired. However, I went into high gear and tried to learn as much as possible. I quickly found ASRAB.<\/strong><\/p>\n I had no idea how important this group would be to our son, to me as a mom, and to our other children.\u00a0<\/p>\n ASRAB provides a space that is an equal playing field<\/strong> for our son to participate in sports so that he doesn\u2019t feel like he is letting his peers down. It provides a space he can compete safely<\/strong>. ASRAB has also been important for my other children as well. It has provided opportunities for them to learn how they can support people with vision loss.<\/p>\n There was no group in our area<\/strong> for children with vision loss so for me as a mom this was a fantastic place to meet others and have connections with families going through the same things as us. Essentially a support group.<\/strong><\/p>\n To have a group like ASRAB close to where we live has been essential to our son\u2019s well being. This group is fundamental for teaching children skills and giving adults a safe space to participate in physical activity that is vital to peoples well being.<\/p>\n Thank you for considering ASRAB so that this group can continue to support the Visually Impaired Community, as there is an immense need for this group.<\/p>\n Sincerely<\/strong>,<\/p>\n Merrick\u2019s Mom<\/strong><\/p>\n During this holiday season, we wanted to share with you a letter written by the parent of a young ASRAB member.
