Honorary Sight Night Calgary Chair – Jerome Salvani
My name is Jerome Salvani, I am the honorary chair for Sight Night Calgary 2024. I came from the beautiful island of the Philippines. I am 78 years old, married for 50 years to my lovely wife, Dolores. We are blessed with two children, Mary and Patrick. I am a retired Canada border service agency officer and am an active member of the Filipino Seniors club.
I was diagnosed with macular degeneration with cone dystrophy in February 2001. When my ophthalmologist first diagnosed me, he told me there was no treatment. At that time, I felt so low and alone.
Since then, I have made many friends with my diagnosis who inspire me with their confidence, positivity, and happiness. I have discovered that having good humour when it comes to my disability will always put those around me at ease.
In 2015, my daughter convinced me to join Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind. We started with walking club, and we haven’t slowed down since – trying yoga, golf, dance, aqua size, tennis, goalball and dragon boat race (we won silver!).
While the activities are always energetic and fun, it is really the people that make ASRAB so fulfilling. The volunteers are well informed, accommodating, and caring, and our yoga teacher is the absolute best. My daughter and I have made wonderful friendships in our 10 years of being ASRAB members.
For anyone with visual impairment, I urge you to join ASRAB for a very wonderful time and lasting friendship. For supporters of ASRAB, I thank you for making this possible. Sight night 2024 is just the beginning.
