ASRAB endeavours to support students with low vision to meaningfully participate in physical education. A large part of reaching this goal is accomplished by supporting the physical educators with appropriate materials, to provide quality inclusive instruction to their students with low vision.
- Literature Review – Sport & Physical Literacy for Children with Visual Impairment
- Students coded BVI and the expanded core curriculum
ASRAB is producing a series of modules for Physical Educators – to offer lesson guides and adaptations for students with visual impairment. We created a ‘Guide for Teachers’ that includes basic information to adapt classes, which presents tips, ideas, and best practices
so educators can continue to create classes that are engaging and valuable for all students in the class. The Athletics and Badminton drafts are complete, with Soccer to follow soon. ASRAB will be considering other sport modules in the future.
Goalball is ASRAB’s signature sport, and was created specifically for athletes with a vision impairment. It is played from children to elite competition, and has been at the Paralympics since 1976. Participants compete in teams of three with: an audible ball, tactile court markings and wear eyeshades.
ASRAB will provide goalball demonstrations to school physical education classes, so that students are exposed and try Goalball. We especially focus on classrooms with a student with low vision, to expose them to the sport and have their class share in the experience.
