ASRAB Statement on the Passing of Elena Liu Hung

The Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind (ASRAB) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Elena Liu Hung.

Elena was a talented and dedicated goalball athlete whose passion for sport, determination, and vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. As a longtime member of the Ontario Blind Sports Association and a participant in Canada’s goalball community, Elena represented the values of perseverance, sportsmanship, and friendship that make our sport so special.

Although based in Ontario, Elena’s impact extended far beyond her home province. Through national competitions and community connections, she became part of a close-knit network of athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers across Canada. Her positive energy, kindness, and love for the game touched many lives and helped strengthen the goalball community from coast to coast.

The loss of a young athlete with so much promise is particularly heartbreaking. As we mourn Elena’s passing, we also celebrate the legacy she leaves behind through the friendships she built, the inspiration she shared, and the many lives she enriched.

On behalf of the ASRAB Board of Directors and our membership, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Elena’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and all those affected by this profound loss. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Elena will be remembered not only for her accomplishments in sport, but for the joy, warmth, and spirit she brought to those around her. Her memory will remain an enduring part of Canada’s goalball community.

We recognize that the loss of a teammate, friend, or fellow athlete can affect people in different ways.
